About

Jan Norsetter

Jan Norsetter studied art in college, graduating with a B.S in art education, and an M.A. and M.F.A, from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Her favorite medium is oil painting. She does many of her oils en plein air (painting outside in the open air). In addition to painting en plein air in Wisconsin she has painted outdoors in Idaho, Minnesota, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Italy and Ireland. Since college Norsetter has studied oil painting with Scott Christensen, Marc Hanson, Diane Rath, Diane Washa and Jonathan Wilde. She has also studied the Norwegian folk art of rosemaling (Norwegian for flower painting) with Norwegian rosemalers: Sigmund Aarseth, Nils Ellingsgard, Egil Dahle, Turid Helle Fatland and Unni Lien; and American rosemalers: Eldrid Arntzen, Jean Giese, Joanne McVey, Gayle Oram, Pam Rucinski, and Nancy Schmidt. Norsetter lives and works in Verona, Wisconsin with her artist husband, Jon Sutcliffe. She has a dedicated studio in her home but considers much of the outdoors to be her studio, too. In addition to painting she teaches landscape painting and rosemaling.

Rosemaling

Literally “flower painting” in Norwegian. A folk art, its heyday was 1750 to 1850. The art was revived in the United States when a Norwegian immigrant, Per Lysne of Stoughton, Wisconsin started decorating woodenware: plates, cupboards and chairs with rosemaling.

My great, great, great grandfather, Aslak Nestestog, was one of the original Telemark rosemalers. He painted the interior walls of Brunkeberg Church and Nesland Church in Telemark. He painted many objects, trunks and other walls as well. His work can be seen in the first volume of “Rosemaling i Telemark” by Øystein Vesaas. I had already been rosemaling about four years when I discovered Aslak Nestestog was also a rosemaler.
